Labour Day weekend is the last long weekend of summer before students and teachers head back to school. So this year we decided as a family to pack up our belongings, dogs and a lot of food and head to a friends cottage in
Oliphant in the Bruce Peninsula for the weekend. This landed up being another Canadian first for Merlin and we were excited to be able to get away for a mini-summer vacation.

A cute 4 bedroom stone cottage welcomed us after a 4 hour drive up north. Merlin and I were able to leave from Toronto after an appointment and since he was able to have 5 days off in a row (this never happens) we went up early in order to meet my parents at the cottage.

It was relaxing to be able to enjoy sitting around and although we didn't have
internet connection we did have cable for the weekend. We also spent time as a family cooking, playing cards, board games and reading.

The weather was somewhat lousy, and Thurs evening was the only time we were able to get out in the water. What started as a walk to the beach turned in to us trying out my brothers kayak. It was really great to try!

I actually flipped once since the waves were going pretty strong further out, but once closer to shore
Minu swam up to the boat and would jump in given the chance. This is one Boston who
loves water! We haven't told her she isn't a water dog :)

My mom grew up on Prince Edward Island on the east coast of Canada, so she has a real love water. She stayed on a rock and enjoyed watching us kayak and joined in throwing a ball for
Minu to chase in the water to bring it back to go again. Reese (my parents dog) stayed with mom on the shore line.

A 10 minute drive brought us to
Sauble Falls. The rain held off long enough for us to hike around and take the dogs for a walk. It was very pretty with lots of tourists enjoying the break in the weather.

Sauble Falls.

Merlin and I went for a little walk before heading back to the car and I spotted this little red squirrel. Merlin was able to get really close to him while he burrowed in the leaves with his treasure.

A great weekend with the family. I hope we are able to go back and enjoy the cottage experience again next year.

Dear Sarah
What lovely pictures - really shows how nice it is up there even when the weather is not that nice. Thanks for sharing memories that I was able to quickly 'relive'. Hoping too that we can create a bit of a tradition out of this.

Thanks for sharing, Sarah. I knew the weather was rough, but it looks like you were able to enjoy things at least a little, and the cottage setting looks delightful. Blessings to you all!
